Mystery of ice ages solved

- By ROD MINCHIN

Scientists have discovered why the planet moves in and out of ice ages every 100,000 years.

The planet’s ice ages used to occur at intervals of every 40,000 years until about a million years ago.

New research at Cardiff University revealed the oceans may be responsible for this change.

The team found there was more CO2 stored in the deep ocean during ice age periods every 100,000 years.

Extra carbon dioxide subsequently lowered the temperature on Earth.
