Unrest in Cape Town: South African students protest at fee hikes and ‘legacy of apartheid’

A member of South Africa’s riot police aims his gun in an effort to disperse student campaigners supporting the Fees Must Fall movement.

The protest was staged outside the parliament in Cape Town, where the South African finance minister was delivering a budget address.

Weeks of demonstrations at the country’s universities have targeted tuition fee hikes but students say they are also about racism and inequality in a society still plagued by the legacy of apartheid.

President Jacob Zuma has warned the action threatens to sabotage the country’s entire higher education system.
