Forgive me if I don’t shed a tear over the fact that the London area has been so over-provided with vast infrastruc­ture projects that they may now have to build the new Heathrow runway over the M25!

Contrast that with the situation up here in Scotland, where the main trunk road north of the Central Belt is still single-carriagewa­y throughout most of its length and the main rail line to Inverness is equally unfit for purpose.

This is not years of underinves­tment, it is centuries of neglect.
