Vigurs insists he never had a doubt as Caley Thistle move into top six

Iain Vigurs insists there was never any concern over Inverness Caley Thistle’s shocking start to the season under new manager Richie Foran because he knew it would all come good.

The Highlanders lost their opening three Premiership matches and were humiliatingly knocked out of the Betfred Cup by League 1 Alloa.

Some aspersions were cast over Foran’s suitability to move from the dressing room to the manager’s office, but the Irishman has most definitely silenced the sceptics with gradual improvement including battling draws with Aberdeen and Celtic.

It all clicked into place in the second half of Wednesday’s emphatic 3-0 win at Motherwell which has elevated ICT into the top six.

Vigurs, who spent two seasons at Fir Park, said: “We were never concerned we’d get detached.

“It was an indifferent start from us. We were in a transitional period but we’re now getting to grips with the new players who have come in and a new gaffer.

“Even in the Alloa game we had chances although it was a hard one to take. It was a sticky period but we’ve got a lot of boys who have been here the

“We knew we’d come back from it. We’re all pushing in the same direction now and tonight we have set a standard that we have to maintain.”

Caley Thistle were clinical at Fir Park as Carl Tremarco, Lonsana Doumbouya and Liam Polworth struck to plunge Motherwell into the relegation play-off place.

However, their overall play was equally impressive as they dominated with some comfort.

It was ideal preparation for a re-match with Hearts who hammered them 5-1 at Tynecastle on 20 August, but Vigurs is not getting carried away with a top-six placing.

He said: “We’re thrilled with the second-half performance. It was exactly what the gaffer wanted from us. He said he wanted a little bit more tem- po and a final product and we delivered that.

“I know that not many teams come here and win 3-0. To go to Fir Park and pick up three points is massive.

“All in all it was a great performance – three goals and a clean sheet.

“It sets us up nicely for the game against Hearts. The team back then to what it is now is night and day. We’ll be wanting to rectify what they did to us down at Tynecastle this Saturday. Obviously, it’s a hard game as Hearts have some really good players but we’re looking forward to it.

“Being in the top six at this stage doesn’t really matter. Being up there at the end of the season does.”
