#HULLPRISON

Hull Prison was described as “a powder keg waiting to go off ” yesterday, after 15 inmates involved in the Birmingham riot were transferred to the jail over the weekend.

Prison officers said staff were assaulted, CCTV cameras were torched and inmates at the East Yorkshire prison refused to return to their cells following the arrival of the Birmingham prisoners. @trurbanwarrior wrote: “As with the London riots there will be no implementation of improvements but more convictions. #Hullprison.” @Justenkarlsson tweeted: “I suppose the inmates in Hull Prison had seen the riots in Birmingham Prison on their TV’S and decided it was their turn to create problems.” @Prisonuk added: “The real test of this establishment’s resilience will not be tonight. It will come tomorrow at morning unlock – if that happens.”

#BRITISHVALUES

Communities secretary Sajid Javid has suggested that public office-holders should take an oath on values such as democracy and equality. @thisisamy_ questioned the idea, joking: “An oath for #Britishvalues? What like Tory MPS having a £39 breakfast on expenses while a million queue at foodbanks?” @Fromagebaguette was also unimpressed, writing: “Ah, #Britishvalues. Like invading 90% of the planet and then complaining about legitimate immigration a century later.” @richard_littler added: “Refusing to take an oath of allegiance to state-defined #Britishvalues is something that I would consider to be a ‘British value’.”

#FREETHETREE

An infamous ‘caged’ Christmas tree in Shawlands, Glasgow, has taken to social media with its own Twitter account. Its hashtag, #Freethetree, has occasioned comment from everyone from locals to Scotland’s First Minister. @wyvis40 wrote: “Every tree needs to be free to be enjoyed at Christmas.” @Babs_b2 tweeted: “This makes me proud to have been born and bred in the southside #Freethetree.” @jagsfan1971 directly tweeted the tree @ shawlandstree with words of support, writing: “Hope you escape soon #freethetree.” @Clareadamsonsnp added: “Only in Glasgow.”
