Muir’s penalty save gives Spiders a victory in the Lions’ den

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Queen’s Park handed out a second defeat this season to League 1 leaders Livingston. The Spiders enjoyed a 2-1 comeback success, with goalkeeper Willie Muir securing their win with a late penalty save.

Liam Buchanan took advantage of a slip by visiting captain Ryan Mcgeever to run through and send the Lions in front five minutes from the break.

Jamie Mckernon levelled with a spot-kick ten minutes after the restart following a foul by Alan Lithgow and just three minutes later Adam Cummings turned a free-kick past Liam Kelly.

The Lions had the chance to equalise when Danny Mullen was fouled 17 minutes from time, but Buchanan was denied from the spot. Queen’s Park head coach Gus Macpherson said: “I cannot praise these players enough as they just keep on delivering.”

Second-placed Airdrie cut Livingston’s lead to seven points thanks to a 2-1 success at Stranraer where Andy Ryan bundled home the winner on 77 minutes. Adam Brown had given the Diamonds an early advantage, with Scott Agnew cancelling that out midway through the first half.

Brechin remain in the hunt after their 2-1 win at the Indodrill Stadium home of earlyseason pace-setters Alloa.

Alan Trouten’s penalty gave the visitors a half-time lead, with Ally Love grabbing the winner after Jordan Kirkpatrick had levelled.

The Albion Rovers v East Fife meeting was called off as the Coatbridge pitch was waterlogged.

Peterhead manager Jim Mcinally is looking for a massive improvement when his side face Stenhousemuir at Balmoor today after last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at East Fife.

Mcinally said: “We were terrible. In fact we were the poorest we have been in my time here.

“I do not have a lot to change it with as we have a small squad but this group of players gave the club their most memorable campaign last season. We need to get back to the way we were playing then.”
