Ten-man Forfar battle back to rescue a point

-

League 2 leaders Forfar Athletic showed the spirit of champions as they came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with ten men at the Borough Briggs home of title rivals Elgin City.

The Loons were unfortunate not to take the lead after nine minutes, with Josh Peters firing a free-kick against the bar and Danny Denholm hitting a post with the rebound.

They had better fortune nine minutes later when Denholm picked out Cox and the striker volleyed home.

But the goal sparked Elgin into life. Two minutes later Brian Cameron released Shane Sutherland and his low cross was stabbed home by Chris Mcleish from close range.

Elgin went in front five minutes from the break when Darryl Mchardy flicked in a Daniel Moore corner.

Mcleish had a chance to make it 3-1 just two minutes after the restart with teammate Sutherland faring no better when the goal opened up for him on 54 minutes.

Forfar’s Stuart Malcolm was shown a second yellow card fordissent, buttheyresponded positively with Gavin Swankie forcing a corner home on 65 minutes.

The draw was Elgin’s first of the season and they remain 11 points off the pace.

Second-placed Arbroath did not make any inroads as they were held to a goalless draw by Montrose at Gayfield

Bobby Linn fired over for the Red Lichties on eight minutes, but it was Montrose who were on top during the rest of the first half.

Michael Bolochoweckyj headed wide on 24 minutes, with Gary Fraser, Cammy Ballantyne and Paul Watson also passing up opportunities to give the visitors the lead.

Arbroath began the second half in a brighter fashion, but efforts by Josh Skelly and Linn both failed to find the target. Both sides pushed for the winner that would give them bragging rights, but neither goal was breached.
