Thomson ‘delighted’ with her LET return as Davies rolls back years

Michele Thomson marked her Ladies European Tour return on an encouragin­g note as Laura Davies rolled back the years to grab the lead in the Oates Vic Open in Australia.

On a day when former world No 1 Davies equalled the course record at 13th Beach Golf Links with an eight-under-par 65, Thomson made the best start among five Scots in the field with a 69 to be joint 11th. The 28-year-old, who gave up golf for a spell after her first crack at the LET in 2009 but has since fallen back in love with the game, made her score by coming home in five under.

“I’m delighted as I hit 17 greens, had just one threeputt and finished birdie-birdie. which has given me confidence for tomorrow,” said Thomson, who is attached to Meldrum House.

Davies posted an eagle and six birdies to lead by two shots from countrywom­en Melissa Reid and Holly Clyburn, German Sandra Gal, Denmark’s Nicole Broch Larsen and Australian Whitney Hillier. Carlybooth­h ad a72,ky lie henry shot 75 and both Gemma Dryburgh and Kelsey Macdonald carded 78s.

Elsewhere, Liam Johnston and Craig Ross sit seven and ten shots off the lead respective­ly heading into the final round of the South African Stroke-play at Kingswood. As Irishman Robin Dawson stormed into the lead with a 65, Johnston carded a 67 while Ross slipped back with a 73.

In the Portuguese Amateur Championsh­ip at Montado, Euan Mcintosh (75-72) is lying in joint 40th, 11 shots behind English leader Joshua Mcmahon, while Barry Hume (71-78) is two shots further back.
