Watsonians name Lawrie as new head coach

-

Steve Lawrie has been named as the new Watsonians head coach, writes Gary Heatly.

The 32-year-old is currently assistant coach at Heriot’s and will take up his new post at Myreside in the summer.

For Lawrie it is a return to the club where he made nearly 100 first-team appearances as a player between 2003 and 2007.

As well as his time at Watsonians, Lawrie’s playing career as a hooker saw him represent Currie, Edinburgh Rugby, Doncaster Knights, Scotland under-21, Scotland Sevens, Scotland A and Scotland.

Over the last five years he has assisted Phil Smith at Heriot’s and, over that time, the Gold- en acre outfit have won numerous trophies.

Lawrie said: “I have always had a soft spot for Watsonians because I had so many good times at Myreside as a player.

“I am honoured to have been appointed head coach and I believe I come into a club in a really good place with a hungry first XV squad who have cemented their place in the top flight in recent weeks.

“I would also like to place on record my thanks to everyone at Heriot’s who has helped me over the last five years.”
