Scottish Students delivered a timely reminder of rugby’s continuing development in Scotland’s universities by defeating Scotland Under-19s at a windswept Inverleith.

“We wanted to show to Scottish rugby that there are some quality players out there in the student game. Hopefully we can expand next season into a bigger programme of matches,” said Scottish Students head coach David Ross.

Outstanding for Scottish Students was man of the match, Finlay Simpson, whose younger brother Calum was among the Students’ replacements.

For Scotland Under-19s, stand-off Kyle Brunton performed well, and there were eye-catching displays from replacements Gary Munro, Shaun Gunn and Robbie Yourston.

Scottish Students made a dramatic start to the match triggered by a break from the kick-off by second row Finlay Simpson and then converted into points by Fraser Christie’s charge and the intelligent support of try scorer and second rowtheonwosu-hope. Scott Docherty converted.

Then after pressure by the U-19s on their opponents’ line, Scottish Students broke away once more before flanker Rob Lind got hands to the ball for his side’s second try.

The try tally for the Students continued to increase when a forward pressure on the U-19s’ line ended with winger Adam Greig slipping over in the corner. From the touchline Docherty judged to perfection in adding the extras.

The damage was completed with the Students’ fourth try of the match, scored by wing Robbie Kent from a powerful break by flanker Nick Stephen to give the university men a 24-0 interval lead.

Fortunately for their morale Scotland Under-19s stopped the Students adding further points in the second half and were able to score a try when Robbie Yourston ran a clever line to go under the posts leaving Ben Appleson with an easy conversion.
