WALES MAN BY MAN

- RATINGS BY WILLIAM PAUL

LEIGH HALFPENNY 5

An uncharacteristically nervous performance, the Toulon full-back fumbled catches and a bad penalty miss at a crucial time summed up his game.

GEORGE NORTH 6

Denied space and opportunity, the Northampton Saints winger found it hard to make an impression although he did have the presence of mind to cross the pitch to stop Huw Jones scoring.

JONATHAN DAVIES 6

One crash ball carried almost 50 metres through the Scottish defence into the danger area was a warning of what the Scarlets centre was capable of, but it only happened once.

SCOTT WILLIAMS 6

The Scarlets pairing at centre worked well in the first half but defensive and attacking standards only had to dip slightly in the second 40 for Scotland to take full advantage.

LIAM WILLIAMS 7

Ospreys winger was Wales’ most dangerous player and their only try-scorer, finishing a move that showed the team at their best as the ball went from one side of the pitch to the other.

DAN BIGGAR 5

After a promising start and a pivotal hand in Wales’ try, the Ospreys fly half was out-thought and outshone on the pitch by his opposite number and he was replaced after 67 minutes.

RHYS WEBB 6

Scrum-half was a real irritation to Scotland. He almost squeezed in at the corner but a daft tug on Seymour’s jersey spoiled a possible second try.

ROB EVANS 6

The 24-year-old Scarlets loosehead couldn’t exert the control necessary to dominate the set piece but an early hit on Price behind a ruck showed his value in loose play.

KEN OWENS 5

An athletic all-round performance by the Scarlets hooker winning his 48th cap, but he was replaced with Scotland two tries up.

TOMAS FRANCIS 5

A 20th cap for the Exeter Chiefs tighthead who, like the rest of the Wales front row, will be disappointed they were unable to control the set piece.

JAKE BALL 5

Unproductive day for the Scarlets lock as his short-range ball carrying met with unyielding tackling and territory was hard to come by. He was replaced just before the final quarter.

ALUN WYN JONES 6

Nothing the big Ospreys lock and all his experience from 108 caps could do as forward momentum swung in favour of Scotland and Wales were hustled out of contention.

SAM WARBURTON 6

A fine first half for the energetic Cardiff Blues blindside deteriorated rapidly in the second and frustration began to cost Wales their composure as the Scotland players turned the screw.

JUSTIN TIPURIC 5

No lack of effort from the openside flanker but no real impact on the game either and he was lucky to escape a card when penalised for a spear tackle as Scotland stretched their lead.

ROSS MORIARTY 7

The Gloucester No 8 was a constant threat in and around the breakdown with his no-prisoners tackling and bursts of ball carrying before being replaced from the final quarter.

SUBSTITUTES

Veteran lock Luke Charteris was first off the bench for his 72nd cap when he came on for Ball on 56 minutes. Samson Lee followed two minutes later for tighthead Francis and then Taulupe Faletau for Moriarty. Once Scotland scored their second try Jamie Roberts replaced Scott Williams, Sam Davies replaced Biggar, Scott Baldwin replaced Owens, and Nicky Smith replaced Evans. Gareth Davies was not used.
