SCOTLAND MAN BY MAN

-

STUART HOGG 8

Reassuringly unshakeable at full back, he didn’t get the chance to score himself as he did in the previous two games but showed sublime skill to deliver the scoring pass for Scotland’s second try.

TOMMY SEYMOUR 8

Fizzing furiously with ball in hand, he almost created a try at the end of the first half, then forced his way over in the second to put his team into a lead that would not be relinquished.

HUW JONES 7

Couldn’t quite outrun the Welsh defence towards the end of the first half but was constantly alive to chances and firm in the first-up tackling.

ALEX DUNBAR 7

Reliably solid in defence and prominent in attack and support running as the threat from the Welsh back-line was contained.

TIM VISSER 9

Mediocre in the first half, the winger was magnificent in the second, mirroring Scotland’s post-40 transformation to create one try, score his own, and prevent another with an inch-perfect last-ditch tackle.

FINN RUSSELL 9

Man-of-the-match performance – five penalties, two conversions, intelligent tactical kicking and some laser-like passing that dictated the flow of play and the ultimate result.

ALI PRICE 8

A hard act to follow in Greig Laidlaw, but the Glasgow scrum-half added a different dimension with his quick thinking, speed around the pitch and smooth distribution until replaced 15 minutes into the second half.

GORDON REID 6

The loosehead surprised his counterparts in the front row by holding his own at set-piece and breakdown until replaced after 52 minutes.

FRASER BROWN 6

The Edinburgh hooker was in the thick of it and came out on top before being replaced with ten minutes remaining and the game already won.

ZANDER FAGERSON 6

The Warriors 21-year-old tighthead gets better and more abrasive and aggressive with every game, at one point squaring up to surrounding red shirts to show who’s boss.

RICHIE GRAY 7

An essential part of a pack that was an impressive sight as it went through the gears to neuter the Welsh forward effort.

JONNY GRAY 7

Formidable tackler and ball carrier with half his brother’s haul of caps but the potential to go on to greater things.

JOHN BARCLAY 7

Scotland captain in succession to Greig Laidlaw led by example in a forwards display that seized the initiative to collectively outplay their Welsh opponents.

JOHN HARDIE 5

Lasted only 24 minutes before being helped from the pitch and replaced by Hamish Watson.

RYAN WILSON 7

Fearless and effective running and tackling by the Warriors No 8 sapped the energy of Welsh defenders and played its part in Scotland stretching away and closing out the game.

SUBSTITUTES

Watson was first off the bench after only 24 minutes to replace an injured Hardie. In the second half, Allan Dell came into the front row for Reid on 51 minutes, Henry Pyrgos took over at scrum-half from Price four minutes later and Ross Ford replaced Brown on 70 minutes. Simon Berghan, Duncan Weir and Matt Bennett were unused. Tim Swinson was called to the touchline with five minutes left but did not get on.
