Mcdonald admits Mcghee could be sacked but insists manager is not at fault for poor form

-

Following a passionate demonstration against manager Mark Mcghee at the end of Motherwell’s 5-1 thrashing by Dundee at Fir Park on Saturday, veteran striker Scott Mcdonald admitted that, in the current climate, it would not be a shock if the 59-yearold was dismissed by the Lanarkshire club, writes Ewing Grahame.

Some home supporters had headed for the exits when Mark O’hara capitalised on calamitous defending to drill home Dundee’s fourth goal after only 35 minutes. Many more evacuated the premises when Marcus Haber took advantage of non-existent marking to head home just before the interval. Those fans staged a protest against Mcghee’s tenure outside the ground at half-time and ranks of the disaffected swelled at the final whistle.

Some had either gone home to make banners calling for his dismissal or had brought them in anticipation of their recent poor home form (one draw and five defeats in their last six fixtures) continuing.

Asked about the supporters’ reaction towards Mcghee, pictured, Mcdonald replied: “That’s football. Claudio Ranieri can get sacked, you know what i mean? we are doing our utmost. I don’t think the manager is at fault for this at all. Yes, there’s been a few bad results but we’ve had a tough run of games and haven’t been helped by injuries and suspensions. We’ve also gone down to ten men in a few games, which hasn’t helped. But we need to stick together and get ourselves out of this. We have a big game away at Killie next week. We have a good record down there. It’s amazing how much better things will look if we go out and win.”

Louis Moult appeared to have steadied the ship when he drove home from Ben Heneghan’s headed pass to make up for Zak Jules’ earlier own goal.

However, Haber and O’hara provided clinical finishes while Motherwell’s defenders were repeatedly posted missing. The defeat leaves Mcghee’s men only two points above the drop zone and Mcdonald accepts that their display was unacceptable.

“Our performance in the first half was p*** poor,” said the 33-year-old. “It was like a hot knife through butter. You can’t be that easy to beat – especially not at home.

“You just have to dust yourself off and get on with it.”
