#INTLWOMENSDAY
Events, strikes and protests took place around the world to mark International Women’s Day yesterday. @metroboundx quoted: “‘Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights’ – Hillary Rodham Clinton.” @Halseyinfoww offered: “Happy International Women’s Day. Be proud, be fearless.” @Carriehfletcher tweeted: “Women are strong, intelligent, ambitious, funny and if we keep raising each other up, there’s nothing we can’t do.” @ros4lba posted: “We are strong, we are powerful, we are unique. Women should be celebrated every day with respect and equal rights.”
#BUDGET17
Chancellor Philip Hammond unveiled his 2017 Budget, announcing tax rises and £350m for Holyrood. @Natt observed: “The selfemployed should pay the same NIS as everyone else. I look forward to getting the same statutory sick & holiday pay too.” @stuartmillar159 wrote: “What didn’t feature in Hammond’s budget 2017: any mention of Brexit whatsoever.” @Angusrobertson observed: “Jaw dropping that given Brexit is the biggest challenge to our economy there was not a single mention of it in the budget.” @Chukaumunna opined: “Hammond who voted to treble tuition fees, abolish EMA & slash investment in primaries says he puts young people first! No shame.” @georgeeaton noted: “Tax rises, borrowing up £100bn (from pre-brexit), endless gags – speech of a man who doesn’t fear Labour in the slightest.”
#STATUEOFLIBERTY
The Statue of Liberty went dark on Tuesday evening, prompting debate over whether it was because of a power cut or a protest. @raymondbraun tweeted: “CNN has just reported that the Statue of Liberty has gone dark tonight. Power failure or social commentary?” @Commsdirector posted: “For what it’s worth, if someone cut the power to the Statue of Liberty as a protest of immigration policy, that would be just stunning.” @loather wrote: “I’m not going to strike tomorrow cause the library needs to be open, BUT I’m excited to see the Statue of Liberty getting in on the action.”
