Cummins is like-for-like replacement for Gabriel

- By DAVID CLOUGH

West Indies have announced that Miguel Cummins will replace injured fast bowler Shannon Gabriel in their squad for the third and final oneday international against England today.

Cummins is added to the 13-man squad, a like-forlike switch, after Gabriel suffered a side strain in Sunday’s second match.

Gabriel, who was able to bowl just three overs in Antigua before injury struck as England sealed the series with a second victory in three days, will continue his rehabilitation in Trinidad.

Cummins has the chance to add to his two ODI caps to date when the series concludes on his home ground in Barbados with West Indies trying to avoid a 3-0 whitewash.

Captain Jason Holder will also be back on his home turf for the conclusion of the series.

His most pressing task perhaps is to avoid the unwanted tag of becoming the first man to lead West Indies to an ODI series whitewash defeat against England in the Caribbean.

The more important prize of a consolation victory, however, will come in the shape of points in the International Cricket Council rankings, which may well prove the difference between qualification or otherwise for the next World Cup in 2019.

West Indies, once the powerhouses of world cricket, have won two of the last three ICC World Twenty20s but are already resigned to sitting out this summer’s Champions Trophy in England.

Holder said: “We’re definitely focused. There’s still a lot to play for. Every point is crucial now, going into the World Cup qualification – and that’s the way we’re seeing this game.”

West Indies have been in position in both matches in Antigua to possibly beat England, but have been unable to consolidate.

Holder added: “In the first game, we showed glimpses that we can compete. But it’s just those pivotal moments we just need to seize - and I think that’s maybe where our inexperience comes to the fore.”
