Unfair tax targets

-

It is not perhaps until faced with the reality (or the bill!) that the effect of legislation can be fully appreciated.

Those of us unwise enough to live in houses falling within the top four Council Tax Bands havejustreceiveddemandsfor 2017-2018 which include special Scottish Government levies ranging from 7.5 per cent to 22.5 per cent. This, it seems to me, is another example of this Government’s intention to soak higher earners and the so-called rich.

How much worse this will become if we are foolish enough as a country to choose independence, especially if that includes being part of the EU.

I fear that there will be an exodus from Scotland of the very people whom the Government has set its mind on penalising, always assuming they can find purchasers for their houses who are able to afford the swingeing levels of Land and Buildings Transaction Tax payable on the upper levels of the market. So maybe they are trapped.

Incidentally, I wonder if the same largesse will be extended to anyone who refuses to pay, or being pensioners like myself, cannot afford these levies as was shown to those who failed to pay the Community Charge, at great detriment to the country’s finances. I rather doubt it.
