Video ref at the centre of the action as Spain beat France

-

The video referee ruled out a goal and awarded another that had been chalked off as Spain beat France in Paris on a night of international friendlies.

France’s Antoine Griezmann saw his header ruled out when ref Felix Zwayer reversed his decision after a message in his earpiece from the video assistant, who was in a truck outside the Stade de France. And Spain’s second goal, scored by Gerard Deulofeu, was awarded after an assistant referee wrongly flagged for offside.

David Silva opened the scoring for Spain with a penalty.

Hordur Magnusson’s firsthalf free-kick was enough to hand Iceland a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. The Bristol City defender curled home a 21stminute free-kick to secure a 1-0 win – Ireland’s first home defeat for three years.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his homecoming, but Portugal lost 3-2 to Sweden. Ronaldo found the net after 18 minutes in Funchal in Madeira, delighting the 10,000 fans in the Estadio do Maritimo.

Ronaldo set up the move that led to a 34th-minute own goal by Andreas Granqvist to put Portugal 2-0 up. Viktor Claesson started the comeback in the 57th minute and netted the equaliser from a corner. An own goal by Joan Cancelo in the last minute of stoppage time gave Sweden the win.

Italy beat the Netherlands 2-1 in caretaker Dutch coach Fred Grim’s first and possibly only match in charge. Holland took the lead in the 10th minute with a deflected Quincy Promes shot. Eder drove in the equaliser and Leonardo Bonucci got the winner.
