MSPS get the chance to take part in armed forces visit programme
MSPS can improve their understanding of life on the frontline for Scotland’s soldiers, sailors and air force personnel, thanks to a new Holyrood initiative.
Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh has launched the Armed Forces Parliamentary Visit Programme, which encourages politicians to visit military bases across the country.
As well as giving MSPS a greater understanding of the issues affecting servicemen and women, it will also highlight the contribution that Scotland makes to the UK’S security.
Mr Macintosh said: “The 0 Ken Macintosh has launched the parliamentary visit scheme new Armed Forces Parliamentary Visit Programme will help MSPS gain a better understanding of what life is really like in the Royal Navy, Army and RAF.
“There are more than 10,000 armed forces personnel across Scotland – servicemen and women who are often based on the outskirts of towns and cities, but who can be deployed at a moment’s notice. It can be all too easy for them to be ‘out of sight and out of mind’ which is why I hope this new programme will improve our understanding for those who put their lives on the line every day.”
It was welcomed by Air Officer Scotland, Air Vicemarshal Ross Paterson, who said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Scottish Parliament in this new programme.”
