After meeting with the Queen to dissolve parliament and formally kick off the election campaign, Theresa May said that recent leaks in Europe were “deliberately timed to affect the general election”. @tnewtondunn said: “Extraordinary accusation by PM – briefers in Brussels, and even EU Council itself, are trying to effect the general election’s outcome.” @Jgforsyth tweeted: “That was a remarkably punchy statement from Theresa May. Came very close to accusing the Commission of interfering in the UK general election.” @smoulderstoat said: “It took Thatcher a decade to become that deranged.” @benpuppypaws added: “She truly does want to leave the EU with no deal.”
#FRENCHELECTION
Stylist Magazine have been accused by some people of normalising far-right views. This week’s edition shows French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen and carries a warning that states: “contains views and policies that some liberal, modern women will find disturbing”. @sazza_jay said: “It’s just ‘liberal modern women’ who find Le Pen’s hardcore racist fascism disturbing is it, @Stylistmagazine?” @laurie_winkless added: “When I lived in London, I was a huge fan of Stylist. Fine to feature her but the language seems way too… normalising.” @bottrill tweeted: “This is incredibly misjudged, condescending and dismissive. Liberal women aren’t the ones whose LIVES are threatened by Le Pen and others.” @forgetcape posted: “I really hope people boycott interviews with @Stylistmagazine This is the most blatant reframing of fascism I’ve seen in the UK so far.”
#TOTTI
An era ends as Francesco Totti hangs up his boots. The Italian playmaker made his debut for AS Roma in 1993 and has played over 600 times for the Giallorossi. He will become a director of the club at the end of the season. @Tom_branston tweeted: “So it’s time, a footballing god is set to retire after making more than 600 appearances for @Officialasroma. Thank you Francesco Totti.” @Asromadublin claimed: “ATTENTION EVERYONE! #Totti retiring is NOT official! #Asroma will not renew his contract as a footballer, but he has not accepted yet!”
