Man ‘glassed’ in face after defending takeaway staff

● Customer left with permanent scar after attack

A man was glassed in the face after confrontin­g his attacker for abusing staff in a Chinese takeaway.

Police said the 48-year-old victim needed “numerous” stitches and will have a permanent scar after the attack in Countess Street, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, at around 12:15am yesterday.

He had challenged a man about his behaviour in the takeaway who then hit him with a glass.

Detective Sergeant Paul Richmond said: “From our investigat­ions so far we know that the injured man had been in a local Chinese takeaway in Countess Street when he overheard the suspect being abusive to staff and women in the shop.

“When the suspect left the shop, the victim went outside and challenged him about his behaviour; however, the suspect turned on him and hit him in the face with a glass object before running off.

“He sustained a significan­t facial injury which required numerous stitches and will leave a permanent scar.

“Officers have been checking CCTV and speaking to staff and customers in the shop at the time of the attack; however, they are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack, who saw it happen or who knows the suspect.”

The attacker is white, in his 30s, around 6ft with a stocky build and dark hair. He was wearing a white polo shirt at the time and ran off towards Saltcoats train station.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment and later released.

Sgt Richmond added: “If you recognise the descriptio­n of the suspect or have any informatio­n that will assist the investigat­ion, then please contact Saltcoats CID via 101 quoting reference number 0097/07 or call Crimestopp­ers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.”

Meanwhile, inquiries were continuing last night into another serious assault in Glasgow.

The incident happened between 10pm and 11:30pm on Wednesday, when a 41-yearold man who was standing at a bus stop on Union Street was approached and attacked by another man.

The suspect is described as white and around 5ft 7in. He was wearing a sky-blue tracksuit and similar coloured hat at the time of the incident. Officers are still gathering CCTV footage.

Those with informatio­n are asked to call police on 101.
