Our Royal Mail

-

I was delighted to learn that the Labour Party plans to eventually bring the Royal Mail back into public ownership. Its privatisation by the Conservativeled government was scandalous.

The royal mail is the oldest of our public services. it affects us all. It is the only one with a Royal hallmark. It was disgraceful to see the Queen’s good name being hawked round the floor of the Stock Exchange, along with our loyal postmen and post women when the shares were being sold.

There is no need for sympathy for those who bought shares in the Royal Mail in the hope of making money out of the public. At the time of privatisation the Labour Party made its opposition absolutely clear, so nobody should be in the least bit surprised that the privately owned Royal Mail may soon be consigned to history along with its shares.

The simple truth is that a public service as key as the Royal Mail should never be a means of financial reward to private investors. When it makes profits they should be reinvested to make the business more efficient, and not handed out as dividends. MARJORIE MACKENZIE
