Double Whammy triumph

- By GORDON BROWN

Double Whammy produced a gutsy victory for Ross Chapman in the £20,000 Ayton Castle Handicap Chase on a packed ladies day card at Kelso yesterday.

Sent off at 6-1, he overhauled Ash Park on the run-in to post a three-and-a-half length victory over his Borders rival.

Winning trainer Iain Jardine said: “He’s a great old horse but he has fragile legs. We retired him a couple of years ago because of that but we will see how he is in the morning before deciding where to go from here. I knew he would stay on even after he’d been headed by Ash Park and I’ve noticed they can get racing quite a long way out here. He’s 11 now, but he seems to still have a fair bit of ability.”

Lycidas and Lucy Alexander won on the same card for the secondyearrunning, thistime in the handicap hurdle.

Alexander said: “Things are looking like being a little quiet during the summer so I’m going over to France for a bit.

“I’m going to be based with Guillaume Macaire to ride out and school. It should be a great experience and I’m looking forward to it.”
