Mcquillan hits hat-trick in dramatic final victory

-

St Peter the Apostle School produced an impressive final few minutes to claim a dramatic win in the Scottish Senior Girls’ Shield at Ochilview.

Trailing St Mungo’s High School 1-3 with just six minutes left, the Clydebank girls scored three times to take the trophy for the first time.

Rosie Mcquillan, pictured, was a hat-trick heroine for the winners, with Yasmin Boyce snatching the fourth just one minute before the final whistle.

St Peter the Apostle have twice won the Boys’ Senior Shield – the first time with current Scottish internationalist John Mcginn in the line-up – but this was a great breakthrough for the girls.

For Rosie, just 13 and in her second year, stepping up to the under-18 Shield squad was another sign of her huge potential. She played for the Scottish Schools in this year’s Bob Docherty Cup and is already a member of the Scottish set-up at under -14 level. At the weekend, she attended trials at Tulliallan for selection to this year’s squad.

Rosie, who has already been signed by Rangers, also plays for the St Peter the Apostle’s boys’ secondyear team that won the Glasgow Schools league.

“The boys are quite accepting,” said teacher Mark Ferrier. “Rosie has played alongside them all since primary school and they know she fits in and is a great player.”

It was very much a team effort in the final against St Mungo’s, though, and Ferrier is delighted that the girls’ game is really kicking off in the school.

The final of the girls’ under-15 Shield takes place tonight (6pm) between Broxburn Academy and Banff Academy at Station Park in Forfar. ST PETER THE APOSTLE WINNING SQUAD: Bethany Kerr, Francesca Devine, Danielle Gallagher, Nicole Cameron, Amiee Matchett, Rosie Mcquillan, Megan Toye, Niamh Gallagher, Yasmin Boyce, Maela Faleu, Sophie Harkins, Mijirrin Slaven.
