Climate critical
I agree with Mrs May that this general election is the most critical in our lifetime – but not for the reasons she gives.
Climate science makes it clear that during the next five years we must get
carbon emission under control, or gradual climate change (which is already happening) will accelerate and become unstoppable. if that happens, it won’t matter one whit whether we are in or out of Europe, in the UK or independent, or governed by left, right or centrist politicians. Climate chaos has the potential to undermine and destroy everything that we try to achieve.
Already, in low-lying Pacific islands, people are having to flee from rising sea-levels. Already in Africa, crops are failing due to changing climate. The seriousness of this looming catastrophe cannot be overstated.
In the long run – for the sake of our children and grandchildren – we must choose politicians who take this threat seriously. Action is required, and it is required now.
So, read all the manifestos. Which party is only concerned about keeping the price of energy down?
Which parties are setting serious goals with actions to reduce our carbon emissions? No Green candidate here in the Borders, but two of the other parties are pretty positive on the environment.
If you get the chance, ask the candidates what they are going to do about the environment in the next five years … and vote accordingly.
