If Lesley Riddoch had actually taken the trouble to read the Conservati­ve manifesto she might have noticed that while, happily for those of us living on the mainland, it draws a line under wind developmen­t there, continued support is proposed for the Scottish islands (Perspectiv­e, 29 May).

Whether it is sensible to make consumers pay subsidies for generating electricit­y as far away as possible from where it is most required is, of course, a different question.

Hopefully another manifesto commitment, an independen­t review of energy costs, will provide the answer to this.
