New Barca boss Valverde aiming high

- By MASSIMO MARZOCCHI

New Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde wants to lead the club to even greater heights.

Valverde will sign his twoyear contract today after being announced as Luis Enrique’s successor at the Nou Camp.

The former Athletic Bilbao coach played for Barca for two years between 1988 and 1990 and is determined to keep entertaining supporters. “It’s a privilege to come here. I feel very lucky that the club had me in mind and offered me the job,” he said.

“I am very excited about heading into this new stage of my career. It’s an enormous challenge and I have the intention of making Barcelona even greater than it already is.”

Enrique won the league title twice, the Copa del Rey three times and the Champions League once in his three seasons in the hot seat, but Barca came up short in La Liga and in Europe last term.

“I’d like things to go well and let the people enjoy it,” Valverde added. “We want the fans to see a team that is committed on the field and, above all, committed to its supporters. In the last several seasons, they’ve been able to enjoy great players and coaches.

“My idea is to keep it that way, and to have them enjoy those things even more and to have them be proud of the team.”
