Cash boost for BMX and mountain bike centres

Almost £950,000 has been dedicated to help develop world-class facilities to be used for European sporting events in Scotland.

Glasgow City Council’s executive committee has approved £949,696 offunding for an internatio­nal standard BMX centre in Knights wood and more mountain bike trails in Cathkin Braes Country Park.

Both will be competitio­n venues for the Glasgow 2018 European Championsh­ips – a new event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “This funding will add to Glasgow’s out- standing collection of sporting facilities, with these two fantastic venues open for the people of Glasgow and our visitors to use, and capable of hosting local, national and internatio­nal events.”

The BMX Centre will be built on the site of redundant red football pitch es and will be the new home of the Western Titans BMX Club.

A total of £ 332,930 will go towards the building of Scotland’s first and only world and Olympic- standard BMX track.

Other funding will come from the Glasgow 2018 European Championsh­ips, SportScotl­and and HSB C/ British Cycling. The council also approved £616,766 towards the extension of the mountain bike trails at Cathkin Braes.
