Wharton play unearthed in papers

A previously unknown play by The Age Of Innocence author Edith Wharton has been discovered amongst papers in an archive.

The full- length play, dating back to 1901, was found in the Harr y Ransom Centre at the University of Texas in Austin by academics researchin­g a collection of the Pulitzer Prize- wi nni ng Americ a n wri t e r ’s papers. Dr Laura Rattray, from the University of Glasgow, and Professor Mary Chinery, from Georgian Court University in the US, found t wo t ypescript copies of the play, titled The Shadow Of A Doubt.

They have also establishe­d t h e p l ay was i n p r o d u c t i o n by early 1901 with theatrical impresario Charles Frohman, and with Elsie de Wolfe in the leading role. 0 Unknown Edith Wharton play discovered in archive
