Looking after tomatoes

-

Vigorous vine tomatoes, those grown as single stemmed cordons, need to be trained now to stop side shoots developing. You should get up to six trusses of fruit per plant, depending on how high you can grow it. When it’s reached the height you want, stop it by cutting off the top and then its energy will flow back into the developing fruits. When the fruits are ripening, cut away the lower leaves of the first trusses to allow the sun to get to the tomatoes and promote more growth. Water and feed regularly while the plants are growing vigorously, but reduce watering later on for a sweeter flavour. Don’t water irregularly or this can lead to blossom end rot.
