A benefit concert for the Manchester bombing victims went ahead with a renewed purpose in the wake of the London attack, with 50,000 people turning out to watch a host of stars take to the stage.

The One Love Manchester gig at the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground was staged 13 days after the bombing at an Ariana Grande show which left 22 people dead,

Grande was joined last night by acts including Take That, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and Katy Perry.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham sent a message of support to London as he addressed crowds.

Speaking on stage at the Manchester event, Mr Burnham said: “We have received so many messages in recent days, so tonight, Manchester, let’s send our own to our friends in London who are going through the same as we were going through.

“We know how you are feeling but we will stand with you and we will get through this together.” Mr Burnham thanked Grande and the other acts performing in the concert, being held to raise funds to support grieving families and victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

He told the crowds: “On days like today it’s hard to find words to express how we’re feeling.
