- By CRAIG MADDEN By ALASDAIR BRUCE

Grove Menzieshill made a brave attempt to reach the final of the European Club Trophy in Elektrostal by beating the Italian side ASD SH Paolo Bonomi 3-1 in the final pool match, but they fell short and will contest the bronze medal match today.

The Taysiders’ bid for the final required pool leaders SV Arminen to fall to fellow Austrians Navax AHTC Wien in a later game but instead they handed out a 9-5 thumping.

Menzieshill opened their account in only 11 minutes through Adam Fallis and doubled their tally on the stroke of half-time with a Euan Cuthill goal. Albert Rowling got the third.

In the women’s Trophy competition in Munich, Grove are in line for relegation after losing their third game in a row, losing 6-0 to Spanish side Club Campo de Madrid.

Edinburgh University maintained their perfect record at the Challenge 11 competition in Vienna with a 7-0 defeat of Welsh side Whitchurch Saints.

Captain Becky Dru started the goal avalanche from the penalty spot but, by the interval, the students were four up with additional strikes by Waverley Miller, Caitlin Girdwood and Zara Malseed. In the second half, Malseed found the net twice more with Sophie Maunder getting the other.

The students will play Austrian side SV Arminen in today’s promotion play-off. Lovat will play Mactavish Cup finalists Kilmallie in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-finals after they beat Glenurquhart 3-0 in their second round replay at Balgate.

Lewis Tawse put Lovat ahead and Lorne Mackay added a second before Greg Matheson made it 3-0 with just over half an hour played. This was Lovat’s first win over the Glen this season at the fourth time of asking.

Oban Camanachd will play Inveraray in the quarters as a 36th minute Andrew Maccuish goal gave them a 1-0 win over Kinlochshiel in their second round replay played at Taynuilt as Oban Camanachd’s Mossfield pitch was hosting a music festival. Kinlochshiel’s Conor Cormack was sent off.

The only Marine Harvest Premiership fixture saw the top two meet at Tighnabruaich, where leaders Kyles Athletic went three points clear courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Kingussie.

Grant Irvine and Roddy Macdonald gave Kyles a two-goal cushion, before Lee Riddoch pulled a goal back six minutes after the restart. However, there would be no comeback as Innes Macdonald made it 3-1.

In the Marine Harvest National Division, Inveraray won 2-1 at Strathglass, while Beauly were 5-1 winners at home to Inverness.
