Thomson proves the best of British with synchro title
Luca Thomson started his fifth year at Balerno High School yesterday. And it comes just days after he reached his biggest sporting milestone – winning the 10m synchro title with James Heatly at the British Championships at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
It was a first major competition for the Edinburgh Diving Club duo, and puts them on course for next year’s Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast.
James competed at the last games when he was still a pupil at George Watson’s College, and Lucas hopes to become another schoolboy cap.
“This win puts us in a really good place,” said 16-year-old Lucas. The pair scored over 380 points – just 22 short of the Games qualifying standard.
“We’ve just started working it this year,” Lucas added. “It worked really well for our first time in such a big competition.”
Lucas has just completed seven National 5 exams, and he has five Highers – Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry and Spanish – on the agenda for Games season.
“I’ll now have to sit down and work everything out,” he admitted. “I’ll have to make a few sacrifices to keep everything on course
“But school has been great. I get all the support I need to help my diving.” “The next big diving competition will be the Scottish Championships in December and then there is the National Cup at the start of 2018.
