Of the many brilliant British inventions, BBC2 has whittled them down to seven and is asking the nation to decide which is the greatest. Viewers can choose from: Alexander Fleming’s discovery of antibiotic­s in 1928; concrete, invented by Joseph Aspdin in 1824; the fridge, created by James Harrison in 1851; the jet engine, built by Frank Whittle in 1941; the mobile phone, produced by Acorn Computers in 1985; the steam engine, built by Thomas Savery in 1698; and the television, invented by John Logie Baird in 1926. ■
