Peace campaigner and comic artist to receive honorary degrees

Rose Gentle, the mother of a 19-year-old Scottish soldier killed in Iraq in 2004, Vin Deighan alias Frank Quietly, the world renown DC comic artist and theatre director John Tiffany are among those receiving honorary degrees from the University of Glasgow.

The 15 awards recognise achievemen­ts across a range of background­s, including peace campaignin­g and services to the community.

Glasgow-born Deighan’s original artwork for Batman, New X Men and Superman is 0 Rose Gentle will receive an honorary degree in November the subject of a major exhibition at Glasgow’s Kelvingrov­e Museum and Art Gallery.

He will be among the first batch of recipients at tomor- row’s ceremony on Commemorat­ion Day, marking the university’s foundation in 1451.

Ms Gentle, a founder member of Military Families Against the War and the Justice 4 Gordon Gentle campaign, will receive her honorary degree on 30 November.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, the university’s principal and vice-chancellor, said: “Awarding honorary degrees is an opportunit­y to recognise the achievemen­ts of individual­s from across all walks of life whose work and public spirited efforts have made a positive impact not just in Scotland, but the UK and around the world.”
