As an avowed “remainer”, it is not often that I find myself in agreement with Lesley Riddoch. In yesterday’s Perspective piece, “Our politics need wholesale change”, however, Ms Riddoch appears to suggest that the “first past the post” electoral system which persists in the UK is an anachronism long overdue for reform. I couldn’t help finding myself in agreement with this conclusion, particularly in the light of the “imbalance” of many of the outcomes in the most recent election results.

The difficulty as I understand it, however, is that fun-

damental reform of the electoral system requires an act of parliament. It’s hard to see an incumbent government seeking to reform the very system by which they were elected in the first place.

Well, well, well. So Lesley Riddoch is now advocating proportional representation.

Can it be that it is the only way in future that the SNP has any chance of a voice in Westminster?
