DUP? Duh!
Following her disastrous election campaign, our discredited Prime Minister is clinging to power with the help of a party for which no-one in mainland Britain voted – Ulster’s DUP.
This band of ultra-nationalists demand the right to send their provocative drum-beating marches through Catholic areas of Northern Ireland, causing trouble which police officers then have to risk life and limb to handle. The DUP were the only Ulster party to oppose Tony Blair’s Good Friday Agreement, and although their then leader Ian Paisley tore up 40 years of extremism to form a relationship with Martin Mcguinness, the DUP’S recent leaders have rowed back to a more intransigent position on power sharing.
The DUP opposes gay rights and some of its leaders believe in creationism rather than evolution. They also are supported by the UDA, a proscribed terrorist organisation, although don’t hold your breath for Conservatives and their mainstream media supporters to denounce Theresa May as a terrorist sympathiser like they did with Jeremy Corbyn. This irresponsible Conservative attempt to form a relationship with the DUP undermines peace in Northern Ireland, because the British Government will no longer be seen as an honest broker between the different factions in Northern Ireland, it will be in bed with one of the factions. The Conservatives and the DUP will be a coalition of chaos.
