Following the general election, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon seems to be struggling to get to grips with her stance on indyref2 and whether this should be deferred or abandoned. Looking at the election results, this can only be described as somewhat surprising bearing in mind the SNP lost 13 seats and over 400,000 votes! Her solution, disclosed via tweets – as we gather indyref 2 was not discussed at the Scottish Cabinet – is that she will disclose her new position “in due course after talking to people across the SNP”.

That course of action is really going to provide “independence of thought”! She does not need to talk to people across the SNP as she talked to the whole electorate during the election and the electorate delivered a very strong message that she now needs to act upon.

RICHARD ALLISON Braehead Loan, Edinburgh The general election result show that of four million three hundred thousand registered voters in Scotland roughly 22 per cent voted in favour of SNP candidates.

Can our First Minister find a way to persuade us that independence is a good idea ?
