Bibby steps

-

Your report on 21 June relating to the announcement of the opening date for the Queensferry Crossing bridge included a comment from the Scottish Labour transport spokesman Neil Bibby to the effect that “the number of delays that have hit this development reflects badly on the SNP’S ability to manage largescale infrastructure projects”.

I would say in response that his comment “reflects badly on Mr Bibby’s ability to resist political posturing and point scoring”. His comment is typical of remarks made by politicians of all colours, and is a prime example of why most politicians are discredited and held in low esteem by the public. Governments allocate public resources to projects and delegate the management and execution to competent firms. Huge projects such as the Queensferry Crossing Bridge are extremely complex with many variables and are very difficult to manage to a specific timescale. Mr Bibby is either ignorant of this aspect or chooses to ignore it in order to indulge in some political points-scoring. In the field of big engineering projects the team responsible for the Queensferry Crossing have done a fine job and deserve our congratulations. GORDON SHEPHERD Douglas Terrace
