Two-year deal gives Fisher chance to stay put in Motherwell and keep removal men at bay
New Motherwell striker Alex Fisher has revealed that he joined Motherwell from Inverness this summer because he was sick of constantly moving house.
The 26-year-old turned down shorter-term deals in England which would have seen him earn more money because the offer of a two-year contract at Fir Park from manager Steve Robinson proved to be irresistible.
Fisher joined Oxford United ten years ago and, since then, he’s gone on to play for nonleague sides Brackley Town and Oxford City, lower-league Belgian outfits KVK Tienenhageland, KSK Heist and KRC Mechelen, Italian third division club SS Monza and Mansfield Town and Torquay United before heading to Scotland.
“I could have gone back down south,” the Westminster-born star revealed. “There were a few clubs that ticked a lot of boxes for me personally. I’ve lived a long way from home for a long time but this was an opportunity I didn’t want to turn down.
“To be honest, I’ve had a career in which I’ve moved around a bit more than I’d have wanted to so to have a manager come in and offer you a two-year deal straight off is something.
“I thought: ‘Well, that’s security in itself and it shows he’s serious.’ I like to think that, in an environment in which I feel I’m wanted, I will thrive.”
Robinson, who replaced previous manager Mark Mcghee in March and was impressed by the forward, who scored four times in two games against the Steelmen. That was enough to persuade the Irishman to bring in Fisher for Scott Mcdonald, who left the club at the end of last season.
“He’s a big name in the game and was very popular here,” said Fisher of Mcdonald.
“I’m in no way a replacement for him at all. I just want to get in here, work hard, keep my head down and, if I can deliver on the pitch when called on, that’s my aim.”
