First-over dismissals boost Fettes on way to cup win

-

Fettes College won the Citylets National Schools’ T20 Cricket Cup in a remarkable match against old rivals, and hosts, Merchiston Castle

After electing to bat first, Merchiston’s star batsmen, Angus Hinton and Tom Mcintosh, were both dismissed for ducks in the first over of the match.

They lost their wickets to the off-spin of Fettes captain George West, who ended the final with three for 12 from his four overs.

With 15-year-old fast bowler David Hood also pick- ing up three quick wickets, Merchiston found themselves 17 for seven, and only a a fighting innings by Michael Grant raised the total to 78.

Though this total seemed low on a good pitch, more drama ensued when Fettes came into bat. First ball dismissals of West and Rory Mather by Charlie Fullarton lifted hopes of a great comeback.

But in a tense atmosphere, calm and composed batting by Robert Edwards and manof-the-match George Conner produced an unbroken third wicket partnership of 70 and led the Fettes team to their third cup win in the last four years.
