Judy Murray: Boris Becker’s advice that Andy ‘ditch’ his mum really hurt

- By ANGUS HOWARTH

Judy Murray has said criticism of her relationship with her son from tennis legend Boris Becker badly affected her confidence.

She said comments from Becker that Andy Murray should “ditch” his mother as a coach left her unable to leave her house.

In an interview with The Scotsman Magazine, published tomorrow, Murray said she was tagged as a pushy mum by male sports journalists.

“But the worst time by a long way was when Boris Becker wrote that Andy won’t win a Grand Slam until he ditches his mum,” she said.

Murray said she saw the comments on a newsagent’s billboard while going to the shops.

“I just turned round and went home and didn’t go out.

“Here was someone who was a huge legend of tennis, and many people would think he must know what he’s talking about.

“But he didn’t know anything about us.”

Murray said she did not have the confidence to respond at the time, but managed to do so a couple of years later when she appeared alongside Becker on a TV show.

“I told him exactly how he made me feel,” she said.
