- By KATRINE BUSSEY

Scotland generated a record amount of electricity from renewables in the first three months of 2017.

UK government figures showed that in the period January to March, 6,882 gigawatt hours (GWH) of power was produced from sources such as wind, solar and hydro power – an increase of 13 per cent on the same period in 2016.

Onshore wind was the largest source of green energy, with this producing 4,514 GWH, while hydro power produced another 1,641 GWH.

In addition, 152 GWH came from offshore wind farms and solar power produced 43 GWH.

Renewable generation across the UK reached a record 24.8 terawatt hours (TWH) in the first quarter of 2017, the data from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy showed.
