How to keep kids reading all summer long

-

Reading is, for most of us, a matter of habit, but it can be difficult to get children motivated to keep reading over the summer when there are so many other distractions. It is possible, however, to keep them interested in books and inspire them to start reading whatever the weather. Here are our top tips:

If your child is interested in films and computer games, look for books based on these. For example, there’s a novel based on the latest Star Wars franchise film, Rogue One ,whichisa great read.

Don’t apply pressure – it’s important they associate reading with enjoyment. Gentle encouragement is better, so make sure books are visible around the home, leave books on their bedside table and encourage them to pack books for going on holiday.

Let them choose what they want to read. Research shows this is one of the most powerful things you can do. Get them into a series or weekly comic like The Phoenix, this makes it much easier to keep the enthusiasm going.

Be a role model. If they see you reading it sends a message that you see it as worthwhile and enjoyable. Our book lists have lots of inspiration
