Country carnage

-

The Wildwood Trust, in calling for the reintroduction of wolves back into the British countryside, is wrong to think that wolves will merely control the deer population. They will probably eliminate these lovely creatures.

Wolves do not waste energy, so newborn and young deer will be killed first, before they can breed. Older deer, presently culled by gamekeepers or stalkers, will stand most chance of survival, but if pursued to exhaustion by a wolf pack, will be eaten alive when they fall.

Animal welfare groups should pay attention to this daft idea. There would be no instant despatch by bullet, but a long and fearful chase, followed by tearing teeth, and an agonising death.
