The Coastguard rescue helicopter from Inverness arrived on the scene at about 11:10am, with the climber airlifted to an ambulance at the Torlundy helicopter landing site near Fort William.

The rescue team praised the helicopter crew for recovering the man from a “very difficult location”.

It was also reported yesterday that a father-of-two had collapsed and died while climbing Ben Nevis as part of the Three Peaks Challenge.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

Painter and decorator Mr Parmenter embarked on the trip with an experienced group on Saturday, 24 June.

His wife Beryl, 63, who was waiting in Wales to collect him when he finished the challenge, described her husband as an “action man to the very end”.

She said: “He was absolutely totally fit. If he wasn’t cycling he was walking. He was just lean and incredibly fit.”
