Teacher drowned in quarry dive
● Woman’s body found at site where teenagers died
A teacher has been found dead after diving in a disused quarry in Fife at the weekend.
The body of Kelda Henderson, 36, a drama teacher at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, was found at Prestonhull Quarry in Innerkeithing after she got into difficulties in the water.
In 2014 and 2015 respectively, Cameron Lancaster and John Mckay, both 18, also died in the same spot, prompting a diving safety initiative to be formed in the area. Colleagues yesterday paid tribute to Ms Henderson.
A teacher has been identified as the diver whose body was recovered from an abandoned quarry in Fife.
Kelda Henderson, 36, was diving at Prestonhill quarry near Inverkeithing on Sunday night when she got into difficulties and failed to resurface.
Police officers, the fire service, coastguard and a Police Scotland helicopter made their way to the scene to help with the search before her body was found yesterday morning. Ms Henderson taught drama at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh.
An investigation is now under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Heriot’s principal Cameron Wyllie said: “Ms Henderson was an immensely talented, compassionate and vibrant person who loved teaching drama.
“She inspired a love of her subject in many young people over the years.
“Those of us at school are very shocked.”
The tragedy comes after Cameron Lancaster, 18, from Burntisland, died at the quarry in August 2014, with John Mckay, 18, from Kirkcaldy, also dying there in June 2015.
Following the two deaths, Forth Diver Training was launched to provide diver training courses in a bid to prevent another tragedy.
The charity project was unveiled after the diving community, who have used the site for many years, were invited to work alongside Fife Council and the emergency services to look at ways of improving water safety awareness.
Inspector Ian Stephen, of Dalgety police station, said: “We can confirm that a woman’s body has been recovered from Prestonhill quarry, Inverkeithing.
“Officers responded along with other emergency services to the site at about 9:20pm on Sunday following reports of a diver within the water. A body was recovered at about 10:30am on Monday.
“Inquiries are currently ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
“The woman’s family has been informed of this development.”
Inverkeithing councillor Alice Mcgarry, who lives nearby, said: “I was watching TV when I became conscious of all the blue lights flying past.
“Divers think it’s a great place, but it’s so deep and dark and there are so many nooks and crannies.”
The quarry is regularly monitored by police officers.
