Racquet serves up an ace

● Carr chooses right race to break two-year duck

- By GRAHAM CLARK

As the world’s best tennis players battled it out at Wimbledon, Racquet proved a most topical winner at Ayr when serving an ace of his own for Ruth Carr in the Racing UK Day Pass Just £10 Handicap.

Sent off at 9-2, the four-yearold took the six-furlong contest by half a length to score for the first time since June 2015.

Carr said: “He had been a bit disappointing, but he had come down the handicap and I thought ‘that’s the race for him’ and it worked out well.”

Southampton striker Charlie Austin had something to celebrate without kicking a football after Another Batt (5-6) successfully defied a penalty in the Racing UK Now In HD! EBF Novice Stakes.

The two-year-old added to his victory at Ripon last month on his step back up to six furlongs. It was a first winner at the track for Newmarket handler George Scott, who said: “Charlie Austin is in pre-season abroad, but I managed to speak to him after the race. He listened to the race but I thought he’d put the kiss of death on it as he said on Twitter he was going to win.”

Leanne Ferguson rode her first winner under rules when steering Let Right Be Done to victory in division one of the Racing UK Apprentice Handicap. Having finished seventh at the Scottish track 24 hours earlier, the Linda Perratttrained five-year-old overcame a slow start to run out a two-length winner.

Keith Dalgleish pocketed a double courtesy of front-running wins for Dark Defender (15-2) in the racinguk.com/ hd handicap and Showdaisy (12-1) in the Racing UK Profits Returned to Racing Handicap.

The Lee Smyth-trained Glenbank King caused a shock when getting up by a short head at 50-1 in the Follow At racing_uk On Twitter Handicap, while Le Chat D’OR (8-1) from the yard of Michael Dods gained a first win of the season in the racinguk.com Handicap and John Quinn was on target with Magic Journey (15-2) claiming the second division of the apprentice handicap.
