Keeping people in prison is very expensive and re-offending rates are high. In addition we read of a steady trickle of violent people who are released only to commit further serious crimes. They may be few but that is little consolatio­n to the victims – who may be any of us. So it would seem a desirable move to review current policies (your report, 12 July). What should be paramount is not retributio­n or even recompense, but the protection of the law-abiding from the further depredatio­ns of the criminally inclined.
