Keeping people in prison is very expensive and re-offending rates are high. In addition we read of a steady trickle of violent people who are released only to commit further serious crimes. They may be few but that is little consolation to the victims – who may be any of us. So it would seem a desirable move to review current policies (your report, 12 July). What should be paramount is not retribution or even recompense, but the protection of the law-abiding from the further depredations of the criminally inclined.
