What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?

A long black dress, with easy access for breast feeding, made by our wonderful Senegalese tailor Omar who works on our high street in Deptford. We have just been blessed with the arrival of baby Django two months ago.

What are you addicted to buying?

Material from London’s Berwick Street and designing clothes with Omar. The Cloth House is a personal favourite. I love designing concert dresses

and everyday dresses too.

Best ever bargain?

Some stripy stretchy cotton at £10 a metre!

Who has great style?

Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and my husband David Okumu. He’s been designing jumpsuits recently.

Name your favourite high street shop.

COS.

Any fashion disasters you’d care to tell us about?

Growing a bump was interesting, finding that from one week to the next I could no longer wear 90 per cent of my wardrobe.

What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?

I’m loving my Marimekko maxi summer dress at the moment. Also, my African threads are great fun – vibrant and full of beautiful colours. n Hughes is appearing with

pianist Joseph Middleton in a programme of works around the theme of Nocturnal Variations, on Friday 21 July at 7.30pm, Music at Paxton (07719 702265; www. musicatpaxton.co.uk), Scottish Borders. Tickets, £25. www.rubyhughes.com
