I see case of FGM every other day, says midwife

- By KIRSTY STEWART

A Scottish midwife has revealed she encounters up to 150 cases of female genital mutilation every year – despite nobody being convicted of carrying out the procedure.

Hilary Alba, the lead midwife for Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board, has said that dealing with victims of FGM is almost an everyday occurrence.

No-one has ever been convicted of FGM in Scotland so far despite anyone aiding or carrying out the procedure faces up to 14 years’ imprisonment.

Ms Alba said: “We’re not so sure if it is happening over here.

“If there was a conviction, it would be huge. It would send out the right message.

“People know there hasn’t been a conviction and they get away with it.”

FGM involves the full or partial removal of a young woman’s genitals for nonmedical reasons.
